Mastering Being Present
On more than one occasion I have had a client ask, "How may I be even more effective being present?" I understand this quandary. I believe it takes a conscious effort to be present, especially in this digital age. For those who like feeling prepared for "what's next" (as I do) being present is particularly challenging, and at the same time critical. Having the presence of mind to do what it takes to be healthy and keep (oneself and others) safe during this point in time in history is especially important right now.
If being mentally well is attractive to you perhaps Abraham Maslow's statement is enough motivation to do what it takes to be present and live in the present:
The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.
Proving I am mentally well is certainly sufficient motivation for me to do what it takes to be present, ideally rating my effectiveness at being present high on the scale of 1 to 10. Is this sufficient motivation for you to do what it takes to be present - living in the moment knowing that effectively living in the moment suggests being in a state of mental wellness?
Having said what I have said I still strongly believe there is a time to prepare and a time to be present. One of my favorite quotes that I think I am served to remember - to be even more present in the moment when either I or someone with me thinks me being present is critical - was made by Saturday Night Live's Producer Lorne Michaels:

"The show doesn't go on because it's ready; it goes on because it's 11:30."
When it is time to be present, I am present. When my audience wants or expects my attention, I give my audience what it wants and I meet, or exceed, my audience's expectation. With this in mind I am a more conscious and present contributor with family, friends, associates, clients and those working for me and with me. I am performing to some extent for my people when I am present. Research suggests the average brain processes at least 35 thoughts per minute. Some people actually process more than 35 thoughts per minute. As a human being I am decidedly "easy on myself" when my mind wanders for a moment. It is ok as a human being to be human.
Mastering any behavior or mindset is a never ending process. I become more masterful being present:
