Machine Learning - So much fun. Get started.

Recently I conversed with two colleagues of mine about a ML specialization I am taking, where we we were tasked with image recognition exercises on relative small sample of images, a few thousands in categories of birds, cars, cats and dogs.

When commenting that my algorithms, occasionally confused birds with cars and vice versa (no surprise with limited training data) one of the two busted out in laughter, and told me that this reminded him pretty much the "Hotdog / no-Hotdog App" from Silicon Valley, and he got me hooked up, to create such on my own.

However, things are low hanging fruits. The tool, I had been using in the course was GraphLab Create from Turi. And wondering how to upgrade from the student license, I realized that Turi had been acquired by Apple, but for a reason: Apple open-sourced Turi Create, to create a frame-work to develop ML apps for iPhone. And clearly, I was not the first one, thinking that this just was the high-speed track which I would have needed to create the no-hotdog app. But then again, I was not the first. I just searched for Turi Create and no-hotdogs, and bingo ....

As it turns out, it has been done already. I recommend the following article. Nice to get started and really shows the power of modern software tools.
