Machine Learning is not optional

Machine Learning is not optional

First of all let it sink in that the future is inevitably dominated by "Machine Learning". If you don't have Machine Learning or AI strategy in your roadmap you are going to be playing with handicap, a very severe handicap. We are not talking about computer vision or advanced self driving car technology. We are talking about data intelligence, personalization and business process automation. Customers expect you to know them, act for them and delight them. Machine Learning can help you with it, and companies that are not adopting machine learning will lag overtime in customer satisfaction.

Second this is not some distant future. Machine Learning is going to be mainstream required component in next 18-24 months, so you can not defer it any more. Every day you don't do anything, you are helping either some competitor or new incumbent to take lead. Remember machines take time to learn but they improve fast, exponentially once they are fine tuned.

Third and most important Machine Learning is not a switch that can be turned on. It takes time to implement an enterprise native ML & AI strategy, so if you are not starting right now with urgency you are too late. One company we talked to had teams working on data pipelines and data preparation for 6+ months. Everything takes more time than planned and that is specially true for machine learning since the market is filled with incomplete or relatively new tools with no help or experts.

Our recommendation for every company out there is

  1. Machine Learning is not optional.
  2. Make it your second highest priority, core product and user experience should still be the highest.
  3. It is a feature not product, so don't spend divert all of your resources on it.
  4. It is important feature so don't defer it to next quarter.
