Looking for the right IT solution

The company needs to adapt to the solution constraint

Everyday, people / companies are buying existing and available IT Solutions to save on cost and time. It is appealing to reuse something that has been build in the past, reconfigure it and make it your own through the software company, an integrator or yourself.

The idea sounds and is great BUT, and it is a big one, your COMPANY will have to adapt to the SOFTWARE, NOT the other way around. A lot of people think the other way around either because they have a big company or because the seller tells them to.... well it doesn't work.

If the software needs to adapt, find a better solution, it will save you money and headaches in the long run.

If you don't, you won't have a good time

Do you expect Microsoft to adapt Windows or MS Office to your need? Do you expect GMail to work the way you want? Do you expect LinkedIn to change to your need? ... no

So don't expect an IT solution to change just for you. The solution has been thought following some key principles that cannot be changed. If you try to go around them, you will run into multiple problems:

  • The IT development team will struggle to implements the workaround and will be late to deliver
  • As the developers will break the system to adapt to your need, there is a risk of regressions and bugs that will be complicated to fix
  • Once in production, every CR will be complicated to implement due to those workarounds
  • After a while, it will be hard to find developers who are willing to work on the project

To avoid this issue, you need to adapt or change solution

If you are facing this, you have two solution :

  • Easy solution: find a new solution with business processes that matches yours (or at least your organisation / your structure / your way of doing things)
  • Hard solution: adapt! Look at their business processes and figure out how to implement them in your company.
