LinkedIn Gets Structural Priority in Perplexity's Ranking. Here's What That Means.
Perplexity doesn't work like Google. This matters more than most people realize, and almost nobody is writing about it correctly.
Google crawls the internet, indexes everything, and ranks pages by backlinks and relevance signals. You write content, build links, wait months, maybe show up on page one. The game is well-understood. Millions of people play it.
Perplexity does something fundamentally different. It runs a hybrid retrieval system — part Bing API for broad coverage, part its own crawler (PerplexityBot) for real-time depth, all orchestrated through Vespa's vector search infrastructure. It pulls candidate sources, feeds them through a ranking pipeline, then a synthesis layer decides which ones get quoted in the actual answer.
It's not a search engine. It's an answer engine. That distinction changes how you should write everything.
The Trust Pool
Perplexity doesn't treat all domains equally. Analysis of its citation patterns — combined with Vespa case studies describing the architecture — reveals a clear trust hierarchy. Certain domains get structural priority before the AI evaluates a single word of content.

Tier 2 is major media — Bloomberg, NYT, Reuters. These get priority for news-related queries.
Tier 3 is everything else. E-commerce sites, personal blogs, company landing pages. These need significantly higher semantic relevance scores to displace a Tier 1 source in the final answer. You can beat a Tier 1 source from Tier 3 — the content has to be materially better and more specific.

The Quality Filter
Getting into the retrieval set is step one. Surviving the quality filter is step two. Most content dies at step two.
Reverse-engineering of Perplexity's behavior suggests a multi-layer ranking pipeline. First, initial retrieval — pull a broad set of candidate URLs from Bing and the Vespa index based on keyword and semantic matching. Second, coarse ranking — score candidates by domain authority and freshness.
Third is the quality filter. A model evaluates each piece of content for extractability. Can the system pull a clean, factual chunk out of this content? Does it contain specific claims backed by evidence? Or is it vague, fluffy, and low on information density?
Content that passes retrieval but fails the quality filter gets discarded before the LLM ever sees it. Content that doesn't hit a minimum density score gets killed — even with high domain authority. The entire result set can get scrapped in favor of a new search if nothing passes.
This is why generic thought leadership posts don't get cited by AI answer engines. The machine filters them out before the synthesis layer. Your post about "the importance of authentic leadership in a changing world" dies at the quality filter. A post with specific numbers, named tools, and concrete claims survives it.
The quality filter doesn't care about your follower count. It cares about information density per sentence.

What Gets Cited vs. What Gets Listed
There's a meaningful difference between appearing in the "Sources" sidebar and getting quoted in the actual answer. Most people treat these as the same outcome. They aren't.
Perplexity breaks web pages into chunks — paragraphs, passages, sometimes individual sentences. These chunks get converted into vector embeddings and matched against the user's query. Write one sentence per piece of content that an LLM could extract as a standalone answer to a question. That sentence is your citation candidate.
