LinkedIn Ethics

LinkedIn Ethics

I am in my mid-twenties, Postgraduate in a technical major, working in a relevant field and have been using LinkedIn actively from last 2 years. My perspective for LinkedIn changed with developed thinking and career progression. From a "just another social media platform" it turned out to be a " Connecting platform with like-minded professionals".I am quite amazed at how people have been using LinkedIn for various personal and professional uses but some people still think it is just another social networking website and use it for irrelevant purposes.I often get invites from people living in a different part of the world who don't have any connection with my field of interest. I am not saying that making new friends is bad but I guess that won't solve your purpose of creating a LinkedIn Account and putting all your life on few pages Right? You would like to meet/connect with like-minded professionals who are either experienced or actively working in a field related to you or to find a new job or may learn some new skills using "LinkedIn learning/Lynda". Please keep following few points when you try to connect with someone.

  1. Read his/her profile carefully and look for common interests which you both share and check for mutual connections.
  2. Ask your mutual connections to introduce you to the person you want to connect with.
  3. Send your brief introduction and the reason why you want to connect and ask for permission before sending an invitation using LinkedIn Inmail.
  4. Always keep your profile updated with a professional profile picture. No one likes to see an incomplete profile.
  5. Do not send informal messages. Be specific and to the point.
