Light

Light makes photography. Embrace light. Admire it. Love it. But above all, know light. Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.

George Eastman

I have often said that Outback photography, my photography, is a light challenge…and I love this challenge. Then a year or two ago I came across this quote. #Bingo. Then I go on to read who George Eastman was. A person I should have known more about decades ago.

“Born in 1854 and died in 1932 Mr. Eastman was an American inventor, industrialist, and philanthropist; pioneer of the photographic industry.

George Eastman was an American entrepreneur who founded the Eastman Kodak Company and helped to bring the photographic use of roll film into the mainstream.”

He seemed such a fascinating man, with many good quotes that I truly enjoyed, and reading of his inventions, business ideas I found interesting. Especially considering the time he graced this earth.

That quote has become my favourite "photography" quote.

These two photos are taken from the same position at the same time, one looking towards a northerly direction, the other in a southerly direction. One is photo art.

I wonder what Mr. Eastman would think of photo art?

I find photo art…fun. Yes, that was the moon in the sky at the time, and yes, the galahs flew by with the moon in the background…it is just that I took a photo of the moon by itself and a photo of the moon and the galahs together. In which the moon is just a tiny spot. I then cut the big moon out and pasted it where the tiny moon was with the flying galahs.

I could have made the moon a little smaller, and a little bit more realistic, and pretended or made everyone think that was how I took it. I just wouldn’t be able to do that…I think keeping it a little bigger is a bit of fun…maybe bring a smile, or even a chuckle.

Do you get the light challenge?

Isn’t it amazing?

One lesson, one very simple, easy-to-do lesson, I was advised to do very early on in my photography journey, and I now pass onto others…move. Your object may not be able to move, but you can. Move to a different position, move a few steps sideways or forward or back…get a different perspective…and out this way you will find the light is so different because there is so much of it. Getting down, lower, is a great perspective too.

So before posting these photos I thought of Mr. Eastman’s quote, once again, because it says so much…and to think he said it way back then, in another country. Photography has changed so much and he no doubt was a cod in that movement forward, but still, the “light” is the challenge. People enhance photos to the point of changing them completely, and if they wish to do that, that is their prerogative…but they first needed that light, to make the photo. Even when doing astrophotography, you need light, hence cameras being able to “long exposure” keeping the shutter open to let the light in.

Anyway, I find it all fascinating. I love the challenge, I love the continuous learning, I love the sharing, I love others enjoying. It is a passion that I have to thank the light… the sun, the moon, the stars…for allowing me to have this passion. It grounds me, makes me thankful for the little things. Makes me humble for the simple things. I’m so thankful for this “gift” my eye for photography (that took me a long time to realise that I had) that has connected me to you and many other wonderful people, opportunities, events, and even the fact that Junior watches over me.

My photography started me on my advocacy for ag and the outback journey. As I thought using my photos could help me tell my story, as I could take photos far better than my grammar was…thankfully my grammar has improved over the years, and no doubt my photography has too…so I continue with both…complimenting each other.

Who was that person that suggested writing my description in Word before posting?

LOL…I have, and now I have chatted, passionately, for most likely too long, but anyway, it is saved to be posted.
