Most professionals know LiDAR as “point cloud data.” But those who’ve spent hours buried in LAS files know: the real work starts after the scan. What often goes unnoticed is how subtle processing decisions can make or break a LiDAR project’s accuracy, usability, and even compliance with client requirements.

Let’s dive into a few less-talked-about, yet critical aspects of LiDAR data processing that seasoned practitioners swear by:

1. Point Density vs. Usable Density

A dataset may boast 200 points/m², but after removing noise, overlaps, and non-ground points, the usable ground density can drop significantly. If your DEM requires 5 cm spacing, you may suddenly discover data gaps — especially in vegetated or shadowed areas. Tip: Always calculate effective ground point density before committing to derived products.

2. Overlap Strip Adjustment (OSA)

Flight line overlaps aren’t just redundancy; they’re a hidden source of vertical mismatches. Even small offsets between strips (2–3 cm) can cause ridges or “ghosting” in your terrain model. Best practice: Run strip alignment corrections early, using tie points and least-squares adjustment. Waiting until after classification makes fixes far harder.

3. Water Body Classification Pitfalls

Water surfaces are LiDAR’s nemesis — low reflectivity can create holes or false low points. Automated classifiers often misclassify them as bare earth. Pro tip:

  • Identify water polygons from orthophotos or ancillary data.
  • Apply height smoothing or manual classification for shorelines.

4. Vegetation Penetration Isn’t Always Linear

Under dense canopy, even high-density LiDAR can fail to produce reliable ground points. Sensor wavelength, scan angle, and leaf-on/leaf-off conditions all play a role. Practical insight: For forestry or archaeology, you might process leaf-off and leaf-on datasets separately, then merge — counterintuitively, some features are clearer with leaves on.

5. Intensity Data: The Underused Asset

Most workflows treat intensity values as a by-product, but they can be gold for feature extraction — especially in classifying materials like asphalt, concrete, or metal rooftops. Advanced use case: Normalize intensity for range and angle effects, then apply it for unsupervised classification before geometric filtering.

6. Point Cloud Decimation with Purpose

When delivering data, clients rarely need full raw density. But indiscriminate thinning can destroy micro-topography or small infrastructure details. Rule of thumb: Use feature-aware decimation, where ground and critical structures retain higher density, while flat, uniform areas are reduced.

7. Metadata Discipline

In multi-phase projects, undocumented changes in processing parameters can break reproducibility. Your LAS header and project metadata should explicitly log:

  • Classification scheme version.
  • Coordinate system & geoid model.
  • Applied filters & thresholds.

Why This Matters

LiDAR projects don’t fail because the scanner wasn’t good enough — they fail because processing shortcuts were taken. Attention to these details separates a point cloud processor from a LiDAR specialist.
