Learning transfer application 101

Learning transfer application 101

We've posted an update of our learning transfer video series. This time we've added a tab for Application of learning transfer. It looks at a two commonly held beliefs. First, that manager engagement is important to the success of a learning project, and second, that participant engagement is important to create enthusiasm and application of learning. And, while this isn't the whole story it's a great start.

Managers can in some situations make or break even the best learning projects, so it's important that they see the benefit of learning, know what their role is in the process, and can support learners through their learning journey. Their biggest influence can be felt before a training project starts, and after the main events finish. But, it's important to note that on a learning journey the event-end isn't the journey-end. So, managers need to be involved in the support and application of learning right until the journey-end. But, as with any planning process, it's important to identify how much manager involvement is needed, or whether it's necessary at all.

One group of people who are always necessary and are involved from start to end is the participants. They need to know that what they are undertaking is worthwhile to them. They need to understand the value of applying what is learned. And, they need to perceive that support is available. Support in their eyes will come from many people, the organisation as a whole, their peers, but most likely, their managers. What must be emphasised is that although participants should take responsibility for their own development, their managers can support them if that is necessary.

To this end we made four videos that are positioned for managers and participants to view before and after a learning event. While some of the themes are repeated, it's important to note that managers don't look at participant videos, and vice versa.

We hope that you enjoy the latest videos. As usual, feel free to comment and share, and I'll try to answer any questions you post here too.
