Learning from Setbacks

Learning from Setbacks

We all have had many “life changing moments”. Find a quiet place to clear your mind. Look waaay’ back and watch your life playout in front of you. You choose the time frame…high school, your 20’s, 30’s, college, 1st Job …2nd, 3rd, etc. whenever that “AHA moment” was for you...

You will inevitably run across your life changing moments, I do.

One of many, of my life changing moments happened when I was a high school senior in Texas.  You know how seniors can become a little cocky 😊. Well I was getting cocky! I was big into conditioning and weight lifting. I was on a roll with wrestling just mowing through people in the 160lb weight class. In my mind, I was a hot shot! Well the coach noticed I was letting this success go to my head.

My definition of a Coach, is a Teacher with strong leadership skills. If a Teacher tries to "teach you a lesson," he or she will discipline you for something you've done, in order that you won't do it again.

Coach used a direct approach to discipline me. He said “get on the mat, take the down position”, cocky and confident as ever, I assumed my position on the mat!  Coach said “Benbow, get on the mat”. Benbow was a football lineman well over 50lbs heavier than myself.

I was ready to conquer my next opponent, Yes I was! Well, I started the match in the down position and unfortunately that’s where I stayed!!!

Moral of the story is “Don’t expect to “win” every battle”.

Learn from the setbacks you encounter in your life and don’t think you will never have setbacks.

The lesson learned is approach every single competition with a Winner’s mindset.

Prepare as if your training for the Olympics

·        Be Fearless

·        Conquer negative thoughts!

·        Fix Relationship Fiction

·        Elevate Optimism

·        Re-Pattern stress

Thank you Coach DeCuir! I’m a wiser man from the lesson you taught me.
