Learning & Development is not a new scientific discovery. it is as old as life on the planet. Business Enterprises that have turned into institutions have always relied upon it to unlock the potential and drive business benefits for their ecosystem and themselves. In the context of the modern enterprise, its importance has become more accentuated as the need for Innovation to sustain enterprises with short strategic cycles has created the need to catalyze a higher level of participation from the enterprise people and systems. Please observe the following illustration which is a traditional Balanced Scorecard that has been tweaked for relevance: 

Performance Management needs to be understood from a completely new perspective in the modern context of a Glocal Business Ecosystem. In an earlier era when the strategic Cycles were comparatively longer and local, competitive strategies could have sufficed. However in the modern context, it is the Innovative Strategies that help enterprises thrive and sustain leadership. This demands a very high level of Learning on the part of an enterprise.

The Modern Enterprise Performance is directly relational to Potential than to Competition and therefore Innovative Strategies cannot and should never be the same as Competitive Strategies.

In essence, while most management theories until recently pussy footed around the big bang versus incremental implementations, the dynamically changing external environment is leaving no choice but to ready an organization for continuous transformation; in other words constant upheaval.

Learning Management is all about preparing an organization to contextually capture the imagination of its Customer Universe to lead Industry; Transforming itself and the Industry itself dynamically equipping with new Capabilities that produce Profitable and Productive Outcomes for the ecosystem and itself.

Learning Development needs to be based on Cognitive Intelligence where Learning establishes the enterprise to Create and Manage New Patterns that the market recognizes it for. With all the obsession around Big Data and Business Intelligence akin to flailing a dead  or a dying horse, organizations MUST focus on Cognitive Intelligence that emphasizes on energizing the people to be Creative and Innovative. This is the secret of unlocking the potential of an enterprise to Perform.
