A learner for Life
Allow me to commence with a quote from my favorite author, Dr. Seuss:
"The more you read, the more things you will learn. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go. And oh, the places you will go!" — Dr. Seuss
My life has been anything but predictable. I doubt anyone's life truly is. Early on, I grasped the unpredictability of life. While foreseeing the future remains elusive, preparing for it is within our reach. This realization led me down a path of continuous self-improvement, learning various languages, exploring diverse cuisines, and embracing different ways of life. Upskilling has been my steadfast companion throughout this journey called life.
Whenever one aspires to gain fresh experiences, acquiring new knowledge and skills becomes imperative.
My pursuit of upskilling originated amidst relocations and motherhood. My foundational education lies in hotel management. After spending a few years in the hotel industry, I veered toward entrepreneurship. Several successful years later, I encountered a juncture in a new city with a baby in tow. This was during the IT boom in India, and I decided to ride the tide. I obtained certifications in Java programming and SQL, and excelled in the exams, but soon realized coding wasn't my path.
A chance meeting with an acquaintance who happened to be an interior designer introduced me to this enchanting realm. I embraced it wholeheartedly, learning the business from scratch, mastering design software, and transforming it into a success story.
Three thriving start-ups and considerable upskilling later, I found myself at a crossroads once more with my move to the US. The journey continued with a PMP certification, a degree in interior design, and an array of certifications, ranging from digital marketing to AWS. Essentially, my mantra is, "When in doubt, acquire knowledge."

Learning isn't merely about knowing everything and being 'intelligent.' It's about self-improvement, building confidence, personal growth, the ability to apply skills in different contexts, broadening perspectives, and staying current in every facet of life. If anything, it's the opposite. Learning cultivates self-awareness. We can truly upskill when we acknowledge the need to sharpen our toolkit.
Learning keeps my mind active and agile, deepens my understanding, and inherently makes me wiser. Remember, knowledge itself isn't enough to shape character. It's a tool in our arsenal. The wisdom to know how and when to wield it effectively is the key. Engaging in the process of learning and honing new skills enriches the myelin density in the brain, fostering improved performance across tasks.
It's certainly demanding to invest significant time and energy in perpetual upskilling. So, why do I persist? For numerous reasons. It broadens my horizons, challenges me, opens doors to opportunities, helps me uncover new passions (much like my journey into interior design), and allows me to check items off my bucket list.
What does it take to be a lifelong learner, you might ask? Agility and an open mind would top my list. These qualities turn me into an enthusiastic upskilling enthusiast.
Learning remains the optimal way to keep memory sharp and the mind nimble as we age.
Remember, if you don't use it, you lose it.
Love the idea of thinking of skills like a currency.
Agility and learnability and grit are some of the most important in my opinion.
I love this concept of upskilling! Continuing to grow - and being intentional about it - so important!
This is such a key topic for success. Agreed! - I am a sponge for continuous, lifelong learning.
The serial entrepreneur… cheers to many more journeys ahead. So much to learn from you.
