Joining the World of Data
SQL, ETL, set analysis, dimensions and expressions, are just a few of the words that have now become part of my vocabulary as I have entered the world of data.
After graduating, I always knew that my career would be built on the foundations my degree in Mathematics and Statistics had given me in analytics and problem solving. I never however envisaged the power of working with companies to visualise their data and how natural a fit this was for me as a curious, analytical and driven individual. With data visualisation, insights can be made that unlock the opportunity for companies to make better data driven decisions and improve their performance from the insights we can uncover to a degree I could never have imagined.
An intense 7 weeks of training in different types of BI softwares including QlikView, Alteryx and Tableau from arguably the best Data Analysts in the UK as well as complimentary training sessions in data science, sales and financial services has broadened my skillset and equipped me with the skills necessary to flourish in the world of data analytics and consulting.
I was in awe at how much is done behind the scenes of many firms to help them with their business challenges and successfully attain their goals. I learnt how business analytics works using different technology, and the importance of selecting the right technology to quickly answer a company’s business questions and provide the relevant information for better data driven decision making. I have been exposed to more programming languages, Python, in addition to the ones I used in my statistics modules, Maple, MATLAB & R, at university so I am now even more versatile in the solutions I can provide. It has been interesting to discover how powerful Python is, as well as its conciseness and simplicity, making it very simple to develop in, and thus has given me the ability to grow in my level of understanding of programming concepts and paradigms.
The final presentation to conclude the weeks of training brought me out of my comfort zone when presenting dashboards and solution to a client’s real-business problem. This gave me the opportunity to apply some of the skills learnt in order to become a data analyst complimenting my attention to detail and creativity.
My short career so far has me well placed to continue to develop within the world of data and I cannot wait to experience what the future holds.
