Inversion as a way of thinking

Inversion as a way of thinking

Inversion is a way of thinking about what you want to achieve, but in reverse.

Inversion is a powerful thinking tool because it puts a spotlight on probable errors and roadblocks that are not obvious upfront. This allows thinking forward and backward, helping reveal compelling opportunities for creativity and innovation.

Risk mitigation in Project Management

Imagine an important project you are working on right now. Now fast forward six months and assume the project or goal has failed. Tell the story of how it happened. What went wrong? What mistakes did you make? How did it fail? In other words, think of your main goal and ask yourself, "What could cause this to go horribly wrong?"

In software, remembering the Fallacies of distributed computing can help in building resilient systems.

The inversion technique originated from German mathematician Carl Jacobi.
