An Introduction to the Cloud Service Models -

With the advancement of technology and removing the dependency on Location, the Cloud Service models have evolved giving an enterprise/individual flexibility to have a service better suited for their needs. The cloud service model is broadly classified as below.

   a. On Premises model

   b. Iaas (Infrastructure as a Service)

   c. Paas (Platform as a Service)

   d. Saas (Software as a Service)

Below diagram is sufficient to mark the difference between them-

Too Technical..!!!!

We can break it down to something we practice in our daily life. For now let's call it "The Burger Model" .

Suppose you want to have a burger. What can be the process steps-

1. On Premises -

The “I have to do everything on my own” sense can actually make you practice this method. So you clean up your backyard and grow your own grain there. Get milk, process it to get some fine butter. Similarly you get all the ingredients and finally you have your delicious and fresh burger prepared as you like it. This is similar to having an on-premise model where you have all the hardware and network equipments at your own site and you are responsible for their security and maintenance.

2. IaaS -

So you decide that On-Premise model to get a burger is actually too much work. We can follow a different route with less effort. Here, we get milk, eggs, flour etc. from a store of your choice and prepare burger at home. This requires less effort and you get the freedom to make your burger as you like it. The IaaS model supports the same where you get the Hardware and Network support from a cloud vendor of your choice spin up your OS, services, applications etc on this machine and start using this VM as per your need.

3. PaaS -

Suppose you want to still trim down the effort as you know the burger of your choice is easily available at a store near you. You can simply dial their number and order the burger of your choice. This gets delivered at your doorstep in few minutes and you are happy to enjoy it. You can enjoy it watching your favourite TV show or having quality time with your family and friends. The PaaS model follows the same principle. You give the responsibility of Hardware, Network, OS etc to your Cloud Vendor and you can enjoy running your own application with your own dataset and get the final result.

4. SaaS -

Now of course you can drive down to your favourite place and order a burger with some French-Fries and coke. This reduces your effort and you can use the service of your choice to fulfil your needs. You get an ambience of your choice (as you select the burger place). The same approach is followed in SaaS. eg. Office365, SalesForce, etc.

I hope you all enjoyed "The Burger Model".
