Interviewing Tips from a CEO

After interviewing hundreds of people, I continue to be underwhelmed at the preparation I see, even at senior levels. Following is some practical advice on how to get hired:

The interview starts in the lobby. The receptionist will tell me if you were abrupt, the content of your phone conversation and even if you washed your hands in the restroom!

Ladies, for the love of God, please leave those enormous bags at home or in the car. Digging through them searching for a pen makes you look like a disorganized mess.

Be prepared with CONCISE answers to basic questions, like “Why do you want this job?” The answer should be about the company or the mission. Not that it is close to your house or you are ready for a promotion.

Answer the question and get to the point. If you talk for 15 minutes and wind it up by saying “Did I answer your question?” you didn’t. Most CEOs have the attention span of a gnat, so after a while we just tune out.

Have examples that illustrate your impact. I often ask, “Give me an example of a time you identified a problem, implemented a solution, and had measurable results.” Ninety percent of the time I get a deer in the headlights look. You should be able to say revenue/margin/turnover/sales went from x to y. If you don’t know, find out.

When I ask, “What questions do you have for me?’ this is your opportunity to ask intelligently researched questions about our business or strategy. (This does not include “What keeps you up at night?”) If your only question is about “next steps” you are missing the boat and have portrayed yourself as a junior player. You can also ask for my advice, and be sincere. How often do you get one on one time with a CEO? Make the most of it.

Good luck!
