Intelligence should be the primary qualification while hiring

Every Company has its own criteria for recruitment, and I respect all the rules and regulations they follow. This post is not directed towards the recruitment process of any particular company, but the trends in the entire industry as a whole.

I was inspired by one HBR article in which they have define the role of experience in a new job.(https://hbr.org/2019/09/experience-doesnt-predict-a-new-hires-success)

My first suggestion will be, Companies should test the IQ level and practical work of the candidates first because if the person has good IQ level, he/she will be able to solve the issues in the organization. Test the knowledge & skills of them and don’t just blindly look at the Experience and Certification. (IQ level in this context refers to the problem-solving skills in general and not the test scores).

Because this person is going to become a face of your company and their Intelligence and Smartness will definitely be an asset to the organisation. Recruiters should give a chance to everyone to attempt and perform the interview. Then test it thoroughly.

Just evaluate critically, Is this experience valuable for your organization. The tools in the market change rapidly and what matters in not the proficiency in the tool, but the thought process behind solving critical problems.

The most important criteria to look for in a candidate is their Work Ethic. If you are recruiting someone who has worked on same tool in their previous organization, that doesn’t mean they will do similar work as you do, because each organization has different Work Ethics. They will have to learn yours as well. And for this, Training is required for everyone.

Again, just to reiterate, this post is not against Certification or Experience. Recruiters should look out for certified candidates and recruit them, but this should not be the only criteria for a job. Please also consider the candidates presence of mind and Work Ethics.

Thanks a lot. If you agree with this, share it with your Network.
