Intel Processor - Far Reaching Security Alert

Intel Processor - Far Reaching Security Alert

As of late afternoon on January 3rd, 2018, details of rumored security issues pertaining to Intel processors have become available through multiple research outlets including Google's Project Zero security team. Contrary to initial reports, the issues actually affect all current processor manufacturers such as Intel and AMD. The discovered vulnerabilities are far-reaching and affect virtually all workstation, server, and mobile device processors over the course of the last 15 years. These issues were discovered in June 2017 and were responsibly disclosed to vendors such as Intel, AMD, ARM, Microsoft, and Apple to allow each vendor time to develop workarounds and patches for the described issues.

Considering this is a new and unique security vulnerability that affects virtually all computers, fixes and workarounds to the issues will continue to be released and improved upon. Initial reports speculated that the performance of computers may be substantially impacted by the software fixes to these issues, but indications now suggest the impact will be marginal for the average user with performance improvements to come in future fixes.

What is affected: Intel, AMD, and ARM processors. All major operating systems (Windows, macOS, etc.), browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.), and software packages.
