April 23, 2020 – Open the Window

For years now there have been keyboards with a Windows icon key on them. And for years I did not touch the darn thing if I didn’t have to.

Seemed it took enough effort to get through every Windows update and change let alone to go messing about with their special key.

However, as I am a very fast typist (my colleague Rosemary is always telling me I am going too fast) I regularly punch out unintended key sequences with equally as unintended results.

Frequently this keyboarding faux pas includes the darn Windows icon key. So rather than stay ignorant I decided to explore what wonders it might hold if I was a bit more informed.

And as a result of my exploration I have 5-new tools at my disposal!

Windows-Tab – Displays every open application on the screen like faces in a Zoom meeting! You use your arrow keys to move between screens. Awesome for showing you all the different applications, browsers, files and folders you have open.

Windows – D – Takes you to your Desktop, and back. Great for opening up other applications, files, and folders without having to close out what you are currently working in.

Windows – E – Calls up a File Explorer screen that displays the most recent Folders and Files you have been working with. I find this helpful when needing access to multiple files at the same time!

Windows – L – Locks your desktop – without logging you out or closing anything down. A good way to keep toddler’s fingers and the occasional napping pet from messing about while you are away from your desk for a moment!

Windows – Shift – S – Calls up a very handy little screen-snipper tool. With 4-options for snipping, you can grab just the data you want, put it in your clipboard and then paste it to another location.
