I'm a senior developer...now what?

I've been a software developer for 25 years. I consider myself a good developer, not some hotshot-rockstar, but wise enough to make good decisions.

For me, coding is still fun. I enjoy solving problems and learning new tools and technologies while using patterns and disciplines that I've added to my toolbox over the years. I'm enthusiastic about cloud technology and AI, and I'm optimistic in the role those technologies will play solving today's challenges.

I'm closer to the end of a career than I am to the beginning, so that has me thinking about what's important to me to round out my career. I sometimes think back to those who have contributed time and energy to help push my career along and only hope that I can have the same impact on someone else's story. I want to open doors, pass on my knowledge and experience, and help younger, less-experienced developers whenever possible.

To accomplish this, I'm going to set some goals for 2024.

  • Spend more time acting as a developer advocate. This includes building relationships with our developers, gathering feedback from our development teams, and advocating for the needs of developers to the company.
  • Improve as a public speaker
  • Build developer community programs and attend (maybe even speak at) developer conferences.

What about you? What are your goals to advance your career? Any advice for me?
