I'm looking forward to 2021

You're probably thinking "yeah, that's no surprise... 2020 has been pretty 💩". You're right, of course, but aside from the prospect of a less-imposing global pandemic, I'm also looking forward to 2021 because I'm excited about how we're going to be approaching building products.

The Product team at Jumbo has worked really hard to get set up "right" for 2021. We have a strong leadership team, support from KMP, and, finally, the tech stack and knowledge on how to use it.

The journey to this stage has been a long one. I joined the company in 2017 as a front-end developer and at this time, our quantitative product analytics was limited to Google Analytics. This may as well have been, nonexistent given how useless it was. We had some strong qualitative insights coming from Greg but that was largely falling on deaf ears. At least, certainly by those who had the means and opportunity to do something about it.

But 2020, in hindsight, was the set-up year:

  • We're now in a position where we have a clear understanding of our product process, something for which Greg should be very proud. Generally speaking, we have clarity on what bets we're going to place and why.
  • We have secured, implemented, and learned how to use a modern product analytics stack that I certainly haven't heard of in sleepy Brisbane. We're running Segment, FullStory, Braze, and Amplitude.
  • We've demonstrated that adopting a data-led mindset, iterating quickly and with intent, and measuring objectively our successes (and failures), that we can place bets which have a large impact (in the $M's p.a.).

I'm intending to do more writing next year on some of the things we're learning about growing an established e-commerce/white-label business using modern product analytics and product management processes/techniques. Let me know if this is something you find interesting.

The road ahead is looking good.

Me to mate! Thanks for driving these tools internally, and helping make this more measured way of building product a reality!
