I. Am. A. Hypocrite.

I. Am. A. Hypocrite.

I ADMIT IT HERE: I AM A HYPOCRITE.

If you want to test the limits of your comfort zone as a Leadership and Communication Coach and Speaker, just admit that statement to your potential audience or clients.

For the purposes of this conversation, I’d like to change that initial statement from “I AM a Hypocrite” to “I HAVE BEEN a Hypocrite.”

That subtle shift makes a huge difference.

All the choices and decisions I’ve made throughout the course of my entire life have brought me right here right now. Drawing a line in the sand allows me to look backward to connect the dots, because, after all, that's where those dots are connected. You look backward to get perspective so you can change the path going forward.

Every time I speak and train and coach and consult and share my wisdom with audiences and clients from all the studying I’ve done, I show how much I know. I am the smartest person in the world: in my own head.

But that doesn’t mean I always take my own advice. I know better, but I don’t always do better.

I have been a hypocrite.

I’m sensing – and hoping – that I’m not the only one who, if push came to shove, would admit that statement. And that’s helpful to me, because it means I’m not in this alone.

Marketing Guru Seth Godin introduced a new (to me) term called SONDER: that moment when you realize that everyone around you has an internal life as rich and as conflicted as yours.

What a relief.

I’ve made tons of mistakes. I have been a hypocrite.

And I bet you have, too.

Knowing isn’t enough. You must DO something with what you know or it doesn’t matter.

Insight without action makes no difference.

What I needed was a tribe. A posse. A MasterMind: a group of people I trusted to help me find my WHY, discover the HOW and the WHAT, and then to help me be accountable to move from insight to action.

What’s the lesson in all of this?

Unless you have a tribe, you’ll do the best you can with what you know. And what you know might actually be holding you back.

You need to learn some new distinctions with a group of like-minded and like-hearted others who are looking for their tribe, too.
