Hurricanes Effect EVERYTHING!

As I sit in the wake of the hurricane, it’s amazing to think being 110 miles away from actual water can still impact my daily routine. People always think of the typical issues regarding food and shelter but anyone who learns or earns online has an instant panic. No electricity can impact your learning or business quickly! And it can have a lasting impact when the aftermath still carries forward.

As a student, what can you do? Download and print what you can, make sure you’re in contact with those who expect you to complete assignments or training that impacts your learning or work. Identify an approximate time when you anticipate being back online and do your best to complete as much work as possible so it’s ready for upload when systems return.

As a business owner, how can you plan? Be proactive. Reach out to your current and prospective clientele and let them know the issue. Give them an expected timeline but also any alternative options. For example, is there a temp or other member of your organization in a different location that can help out in the short term? Will you just shut down and let clientele know that due to an emergency you’re unavailable until a specific date? Remember, knowledge is power and your clients need reassurance from you. Also be sure to give them a reason to come back; offer a free class or a coupon for a discount. Keeping those who were loyal to you is important and will also offer them a thank you for staying with you during this difficult time.

Lastly, be prepared. What work can you complete without electricity? If you have down time, is it time to read or prep for the return of your computer access? Make the most of the time and think about how to really return with a noticeable impact so everyone is aware you’re again available.

Remember that disasters always make us review our situation, prioritize what is important to us, and an opportunity to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. It’s also some down time and a chance to think about how to make the most of your time away and to be reflective. Stay safe everyone!

Excellent article.  Next time I teach Online I am going to let all my students read this BEFORE any weather disaster is announced.
