Human Level Artificial Intelligence

Not science fiction, but technology just around the corner

We have all seen movies like The Terminator, and fantasized about what the future would look like when the machines are as clever as we humans. Even though we might not need to worry much about a machine traveling back in time, recent development in the artificial intelligence domain is now swiping the curtains of impossibility. As we raise our gaze we realize that the view is near, and breathtaking.

Not long ago I went through several youtube clips on the matter of modern artificial intelligence. There were TED talks, there were documentaries and there were interviews with guys like Elon Musk. They showed that the future was not only near, but it was here actually, with regards to every day access to smart machines and what is next.

Today we are using Google, Siri and assisted driving systems; all of which is being developed with so called deep learning. The concept of deep learning is not only the latest trend within artificial intelligence, it is the fitting piece to achieve human level intelligence. The deep learning concept is also highly inspired by the architectural neural networks structure in our own brains.

In simple term the deep learning neural network is a set of layers with neurons, tied by relations that is getting stronger when something matches and weaker when it does not. The first layer represents the atoms of knowledge, and each layer behind that represents more compound units of knowledge. In the visual world, the first layer might take in pixel level data, the next identify lines and the third simple objects.

There are still some steps from our current level on language understanding, voice recognition and visual identification to #human level artificial intelligence. But we are now moving forward quite rapidly. Statistics from interviews with many scientists within current field shows an expectation that we will have human level artificial intelligence somewhere between 2040 and 2050.

So what milestones could one imagine from here to there, and what happens after...?
