How to Start Coding ???
It was November 2019 when I had this same question in my mind. I was distraught because the whole day I keep on thinking that I have to start & at the end of the day I end up with more darkness. Not because I was not willing to do, but because I didn't knew where to start. Then finally, I talked to some of my seniors Javed Ali & Tushar Sinha & they helped me a lot. They told me to first begin with Data Structures & Algorithms & they suggested me to watch a course Algorithms-I from Coursera. So I started doing the course. The lectures were quite boring & the professor Used Java & I knew a bit of C++, but language doesn't matter until & unless you got the concept. So I kept on watching the videos & also after each topic, I went to leetcode.com to solve some questions related to that particular topic. OMG! I still remember that time when I struggled so much just to solve one easy level question the whole day. But that's the time where real learning happened. If you try to build a multi-storey building with a weak foundation than mark my words, A small windstorm will come very soon & everything will be gone & then you have to again start from zero which is more than enough to cause depression. Data Structures & Algorithms are the building-blocks without which you can't do anything. So start with DSA.
Another mistake which most of the people do Is, they keep on searching for other's solutions without giving there best. Trust me, you are robbing yourself & will go nowhere. So before you see the solution make sure that you have given all your efforts, have revised the concepts(if needed) & have tried with all possible approaches.
I have written all this with my personal experience. I may be wrong somewhere, but this is what I did. You can watch other courses too, or you can solve the problem from some other platforms, but make sure that you do something productive each & every day.
Hope you like it & have got the answer.
Cheers.
Hello, sophomore from IIT Kharagpur, It feels so relatable coz I'm also struggling to start with programming mainly because I don't from where I should and lack of a mentor, I really want to know more about your journey and seek for mentorship. Thanks
Thank you sir, for sharing your experience.. These real experiences give strength to continue hard working..
Yes Sir you are absolutely right. It is needed to make first our foundation strong with the fundamentals like DSA and then keep on doing practice.
Thanks for this helping article
So, u started coding in nov '19 and in 2020 u were able to get selected into GSoC!? Tell a lil bit more about how u got into GSoC maybe?
