How have advances in Computing Power and Cloud Technology transformed your career?

I came across this photo over the weekend while cleaning up, and despite cringing at the poor image quality, it instantly took me down memory lane to the early days of my career. This photo was taken when I worked as a Unix System Engineer at Compaq—part of an amazing team during one of the most exciting phases of my professional life. I loved the technology too: the legendary Compaq Alpha Server series.

Throughout my career in technology, two major advancements have profoundly shaped not only the industry but also my own professional journey: the exponential rise in computing power and the evolution of cloud computing. Looking back, these shifts didn’t just change the tools we used—they redefined business models and opened new pathways for innovation and leadership.

Early in my career, I joined Compaq shortly after its acquisition of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). At the time, DEC’s Alpha servers represented the pinnacle of computing power. These machines were massive—physically imposing, requiring extensive cooling, and operated by highly specialized teams. They powered mission‑critical operations across telecommunications, financial services, and other high‑demand sectors.

But the Alpha architecture existed at a turning point. Rapid improvements in Intel‑based servers—smaller, more affordable, and increasingly reliable—began shifting the market. When HP acquired Compaq, the Alpha line was eventually discontinued. For me, that moment marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

I transitioned into working with Intel technologies and became a Microsoft Certified Engineer, embracing the distributed, scalable, and cost‑effective computing models that were reshaping the industry. It was an early lesson in the importance of adapting to technological change—a lesson that would come full circle years later.

Leading a Cloud‑First Transformation

Fast forward to my current organization, which I joined six years ago. At the time, we operated a traditional on‑premises data center hosting several enterprise applications. Recognizing the long‑term inefficiencies and the need for greater flexibility, I led a full‑scale modernization initiative to move the organization to the cloud.

This cloud migration proved invaluable during the COVID‑19 pandemic. As part of a cost‑saving measure, the organization decided to sell its building and lease a smaller office. In the past, such a move would have required complex planning around data center relocation. Instead, our cloud‑first approach meant the new office required no data center at all—everything was already running seamlessly in the cloud.

Looking Ahead

From massive, high‑maintenance Alpha servers to the lean efficiency of Intel architecture, and now to the boundless scalability of the cloud, each wave of technological progress has reshaped how organizations operate—and how technologists must adapt.

For me, these advancements have been more than industry trends; they have shaped my roles, expanded my expertise, and reinforced the importance of staying ahead of the curve. As we enter an era defined by AI, automation, and edge computing, one thing is certain: the pace of change will only accelerate. And once again, our ability to adapt will determine our ability to lead.
