How to Format a Computer
Are you getting rid of your old computer? Or did you just buy a second-hand machine, and would want it to have a fresh start? In either case, it’s important to format a computer to get rid of any virus or malware it might have.
You can easily format your computer without hiring an expert to do it for you. Just know how to do it right. Before you start the formatting process, ensure that you have backed up your files on an external hard drive to avoid losing them. In this article, I will guide you on how to format a computer in 7 simple steps.
Step 1. Back Up Your Hard Drive
Formatting your computer will erase all the data. So, it’s imperative that you backup your hard drive on an external hard drive or CD. This way, you won’t lose your important information.
Step 2. Choose Your Preferred Installation Method
The manufacturer provides you with the method of installation. If they provided you with a set of installation CDs when you bought the computer, then use them. If you don’t have them, the computer may set up a restore partition. This will prompt you to use a different installation method.
Step 3. Insert the Disk into the CD Drive
Once you insert the operating system disk into the CD/DVD drive, it will auto-run. Select the option you wish to use to install a new copy of the OS.
Step 4. Wait for the Disk to Load.
Be patient and follow all the prompts. Loading may take several minutes, so don’t be tempted to intervene. Intervening may disrupt the whole process.

Step 5. Let the Computer Complete the Installation
Once the machine completes the installation process, it will display a completely fresh desktop.
Step 6. Restart the Computer
Once the machine restarts, wait until it reboots. While it is rebooting, press the F10 button repeatedly. It will lead you to the “restore or repair options” partition.
Step 7. Install a Fresh System
The “restore or repair options” partition will run the program to format, and reload the operating system. Install device drivers and install all the software that came with your computer.
Step 8. Completing the Reformat Process
The reformatting process will only take about 30 minutes.
With this step-by-step guide, you can easily format your computer like a pro, without losing any of your data. It will help you when your computer isn’t working right, or when you intend to sell it and don’t want your data to get into wrong hands.
