How to develop the Best Training Program - Revision 2
When I was promoted to my current position as Operations Engineer at CLH Aviation Headquarters in Madrid, one of the tasks I got involved in was to define, implement, and participate in the staff training programs in CLH Aviation Airport Fuel Facilities. As soon as I started the training programs, I realized the potential of these activities and I began to look at the training programs as an opportunity for all of us, both trainer and trainees, to learn and to improve our skills. My brother Gorka often reminds me that the secret of building a successful society is education, and I believe that he is completely right. Raising our children on ethical values, respect to others, and the ability to look inside themselves to find out their way in life is a must for their happiness and success, and to create a fair and sustainable world. Here arise the benefits of performing suitable training for students.
To become a trainer at CLH Aviation, I went through some training programs myself to learn how to train. This sounds funny, doesn’t it? Well, those were good training activities, but I think I was missing the most important thing. Understanding how our brain works, so you can improve techniques that will benefit the learning process. It is funny how humans have got the capacity of analyzing and reflecting on everything with the aim of improving the processes involved in each activity, and it is even funnier, that from the very beginning, you have to study things at school and nobody ever explains to you how your brain works—the tiny machine that stores all the information—so that you could be in the position of improving the learning process.
By chance, and with the aim of improving my teaching techniques in my trainings, I came across a course, “Learning how to learn,” that explains in detail how the brain works, and this has been the turning point for me. Now, with the inputs of this course, and with my previous experience in training people, I think I am able to develop the Best Training Programs.
For a successful training program, I would consider the following items “the key musts” in it:
- Understand how the brain works, different concentration modes.
- Explain different studying techniques, and how to create new good habits.
- Assure that the trainees learn the reasons for the tasks and understand them.
- Frequent tests to evaluate the learning process, to identify gaps in the processes, so efforts can be made to concentrate on those items.
- Use teaching as a learning technique (trainee to trainee).
- Always include case studies and examples of errors, and consider those elements of the learning process as integral
- Do frequent excercise and get good sleep
Bearing all this in mind, and also transmitting the advantages of being trained to the new learners, we will have high probabilities of succeeding in our goal of getting a well-trained staff, interested in how to do their tasks properly, aware of consequences and understanding those tasks in depth.
Finally, we should also apply this knowledge when we expect to learn new tasks. When you are able to understand something, it is better to deal with that issue; so learning how we process the information in our brain will provide good management of the learning and teaching, and we will be able to apply the best techniques in order to obtain excellent results.
Please forward feedback, so we can improve/completly the list of "must" to consider when preparing the Best Training Program. Thank you all
