How to Create Effortless Learning Experience?

In this world, where everything is constantly being innovated and people want to up skill themselves at a pace which is convenient to them, it is essential that an organization is able to provide effortless learning experience. This is now one of the key factors being considered by the talent to determine whether to join any organization or not. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality and Analytics, it is now easier to understand the preferences of any individual. This helps in not only curating the content as per the audience but also highlighting the right material to interested people. Clearly, the self directed learning model is preferred by the employees.

After reading a lot of material, I came to a conclusion that there are 4 keys to create effortless learning experience. These keys are as follows:

Microlearning
  1. Mobile Learning : It is also known as M-Learning. It is a way to make the learning content accessible through mobiles. It could be through an app or website. The content must be organized in such a way that it is user friendly along with simple navigation.The best way to implement it is to create a responsive mobile app with the content curated as per the target audience and with the focus on developing their technical and behavioral skills. Through a mobile app, the learning material will be easily accessible at any given point of time. This will lead to self paced learning which is the need of the hour.

2. Microlearning : In simple words, byte sized learning. With the reducing span of attention of humans, it is essential that the entire training is split into smaller modules. It can be referred without any pain of going through the entire material to find any specific point. Now, once interested employee has downloaded and enabled the mobile app designed for training's, the next important step is retention. Retention in terms of the employee willing to learn more and in terms of remembering the knowledge gained through the available training's. Byte sized content in form of short videos of 2-3 minutes would be ideal to explain any concept. These videos must be visually appealing with relevant and crisp content. We can have a mix of audio-visual content in the form of podcast also.

3. Geofencing : It is a location based service in which the software or an app uses GPS, cellular data etc to trigger a pre-programmed action when a mobile device enters or exits a virtual boundary setup around a geographical location known as geofence. This is an emerging trend in the field of learning and development. Through this, right information can be provided to an individual at right time. This would also mold the thought process or behaviour of an individual according to the new trends. Through the mobile app created for the learners, the key points and information about the new trends must be pushed through notifications at right time by identifying virtual boundary. The ideal time will be when an employee is entering the food court or entering office. If an employee receives any kind of information about any subject at this point of time then that pointer will now become the topic of discussion with his/her colleagues leading to dialogic learning. This will also improve the productivity of the employees as now they would be surely having meaningful discussions. Along with this, the employees around this group would also be affected in a positive way resulting in social learning. It would also encourage the employee to revisit the app and learn more about his/her areas of interest. Undoubtedly, it will ensure that the employee is up to date with the latest trend and thus, take informed decisions. This development of an employee's thought process would in turn provide the organization more innovative ideas to move forward.

4. Virtual or Augmented Reality or Simulation Program: With the availability of VR goggles, it is now easier to make the person apply the knowledge gained immediately. Alternatively, the mobile friendly simulation program can be used to provide experiential learning. Along with this, the individual would be able to see the impact created through his or her actions and reflect on it. And reflection is essential for the retention of any training. Through reflection, the understanding of concepts will be better and the employee will be able to identify the areas of improvement so that when he/she hits the ground, he/she is not experimenting but implementing the key takeaways. The simulation programs must be mobile friendly or the VR googles must be easily available to the employees at least at workplace. This kind of immersive learning will enhance the metacognition of the employees.
