While preparing to talk with Satya, I decided to “meet” him through his writing, from his first email as Microsoft CEO to his book Hit Refresh. There were many moments of wisdom that gave me a window to Satya’s mind and heart, but his clarity on the role of innovation stayed with me. In Satya’s words: “Our industry does not respect tradition. It only respects innovation.”
Innovation is the key to be and remain relevant. If the last 5 years have given us a taste of what leveraging data, applied ML, and AI can do, we have the opportunity (and the responsibility) to shape and lead for the better that transformation, which is both digital and physical, at edge and cloud scale.
Innovation happens everywhere and comes from everyone. There is something particularly humbling and mobilizing in that moment when state-of-the-art science and technology meet extremely complex real-business and world problems: the realization that what “customers” need may exceed what is possible, and that is an invitation I seldom pass.
Few companies can say they were foundational to what personal computing created for the world: a world where many could access technology to digitally imagine, discover, create, play, learn, code, run a business, and fundamentally make the world around us better and brighter. Just like then, Microsoft’s mission echoes those same values to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.
It is an honor and a pleasure to join John Shewchuk and Judson Althoff on this quest as Microsoft’s Chief Data Officer for WBC to accelerate this mission through the ethical, trusted, transparent and innovative use of data, decision sciences, and artificial intelligence. These fields are among the few capable of tackling the most difficult challenges we face as a planet, to help do more, and do better for every organization and for everyone.
Let’s achieve more together!
Great to hear such insightful thoughts, Hernan ! It’s a great place to start a journey. ‘A little more improvisation each moment’ a wise Air Marshal’s comments struck with me many years ago. The impact : I haven’t looked back in being relentless for innovation.
Congrats! Exciting new journey!
"This is how we've always done it" isn't an attitude that can last. Hence I like your quote: "Our industry does not respect tradition. It only respects innovation.”
Great news and congrats, Hernan! And a mission we all are behind.
Congratulations Hernan! Wishing you the very best!
