Healthcare SQL Analysis

Healthcare SQL Analysis

The Data

A hospital administrator hired me to gather data to gather insight into a patient's data, which included duration, treatment, demographic, and what type of specialty doctor was needed.

I used the following data set, which contains predictions on hospital readmissions for diabetes from 1999-2008 for 130 hospitals.

After I uploaded the data set into MySQL, I wanted to explore the following:

  • How often were patients staying in the hospital?
  • What is the correlation between the number of lab procedures increased per day?
  • Does ethnicity play a factor in the number of lab procedures needed?
  • What specialty doctor or procedure was needed, and how often on average?
  • Did the number of medications and procedures given to patients play a significant role in the duration of the patient's visit to the ER?

Insight

  • A patient's average length of time at the hospital was between 2-4 days. The vast majority of patients stayed at the hospital longer than one day.
  • The correlation shows that the longer patients stay in the hospital, their lab procedures increase starting on day 4.
  • On average, African Americans had the most procedures needed at 44, while Hispanics had the least at 41.
  • Cardiothoracic surgery was performed on the least number of patients, while cardiologists were needed for most patients.
  • The number of lab procedures and medications significantly reduced the patient's hospital stay.

Analysis

I shared the queries I wrote and the results for each below, which would allow others to follow along more easily.

How often were patients staying in the hospital overnight?

The data shows that the majority of patients required more than a 1-day visit to the hospital. The most frequent number of days a patient remained at the hospital was between 2-4 days.

What is the correlation between the number of lab procedures increased per day?

We can see from the results above that the longer a patient stays in the hospital, the more lab procedures are performed, beginning on day 5.

Does ethnicity play a factor in the number of lab procedures needed?

The results indicate that African Americans required the most lab procedures from any other ethnic group, while Hispanics required the least amount. Although, the difference in the average amount of lab procedures performed by all groups was minimal.

What specialty doctor or procedure was needed more, and how often on average?

The data shows that most patients required a Cardiologist (5,352) but needed the least amount of lab procedures, while Cardiothoracic Surgeons performed on 109 patients but required the most lab procedures with 3.5.

Did the number of medications and procedures given to patients play a significant role in the duration of the patient's visit to the ER?

The data shows that the longer a patient was in the ER, the more medication they were given, which helped reduce their visit duration.

I provided the information below to the hospital administrator, which summarized my findings and allowed them to focus on how each patient was handled in the hospital's care.

Conclusion

I was able to provide the Hospital administration with the patient's data, which included duration, treatment, demographic, and what type of specialty doctor was needed. We now can conclude that the average length of time a patient stayed in the hospital was between 2-4 days. The amount of lab procedures began to increase starting on day 4. Ethnicity did not significantly affect the number of lab procedures needed. Cardiologists were required for most patients that checked into the hospital. Lastly, the number of lab procedures and medications helped reduce the patient's stay.
