1. Cyber Incidents Breakdown

In August, the cyber landscape remained volatile, with a total of 3,811 reported incidents. Here's a breakdown of these cyber incidents:

  1. Defacements: We saw a massive increase in website defacements, indicating a higher level of defacement reporting as well as collection, as 2,789 incidents were defacements. This number highlights the ongoing threat to website integrity, where attackers modify website content or appearance without permission.
  2. Hacker Forum Activities: There were 223 instances of activities on hacker forums, which points to the vibrant underground market for cyber threats. These forums are often spaces where cybercriminals exchange information, tools, and services related to hacking.
  3. Leak Reports: The month saw a sharp increase in leak reports with 189 incidents, showing that hackers have been busy this summer collecting and sharing data.  This figure underlines the issues surrounding data breaches and the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information.
  4. News Coverage: News coverage dropped month on month, indicating that news is no longer the first to report on incidents, with 116 cyber incidents.
  5. Official Reports: There were 91 incidents reported through official channels, showing that official reports are a small, trailing indicator of compromise.
  6. Ransomware Incidents: Ransomware attacks remained rampant with 397 recorded incidents, underscoring the prevalent and persistent nature of this type of cyber threat.
  7. SEC Filings: SEC filings accounted for 6 incidents, contributing to the overall understanding of the cyber threat landscape and emphasizing the importance of continuous monitoring and reporting.
