Good COP, bad COP?
The UN Climate Summit talks (COP27) are drawing to a close and the Egyptian hosts are still trying to broker a global climate deal among almost 200 countries after two week’s of negotiations.
So what are the sticking points?
Rachel Kyte, senior climate change advisor to the UN Secretary General, said on BBC News today “It’s money, money, money and money. At the end of the day, the longer we don’t act, the more it’s going to cost us…the cost to transition to renewable energy, the more it’s going to cost in terms of the damage that we’re already incurring from climate impact and the more it’s going to cost the rich countries that should and can afford to help developing countries – it’s going to cost them more to do.”
And while acknowledging there has been some important developments, particularly around calls to phase out fossil fuels, Kyte pointed out numerous challenges remain.

Time will tell if the COP27 talks turn out to be a success or failure and opinions will vary depending on stakeholder interests, but many argue it’s now time to see ambitions translated into action. Indeed, there’s a huge difference between ‘saying’ and ‘doing’.
Let’s hope the talks end well and help to strengthen the fight against global warming. There’s no planet B.
