GitHub, where next?

GitHub has made a very impressive journey from a pure open source focus to a mixed mode which holds enough promise to propel GitHub past the USD2bn valuation mark. In this article Ben Halpern shares a number of possible futures for GitHub - not all good for the open source community!

It's a great overview. The only omission that comes to mind are overtures from Microsoft. Their bet under Satya Nadella on open source and openness in general could make GitHub a good and natural match. More so than, say, Facebook.

Yes,- the article is an interesting read. Even Microsoft open source their products (e.g. docs.microsoft.com (http://www.infoq.com/news/2016/05/docs-ms-com)) and with the momentum open source has can it would be very unpopular to shut down GitHub in a hostile take-over or impair their services. Something neither Google or Facebook are likely to easily get over. So real question to ask is: if more and more becomes open source what should the corporate value-add essentially be in the near future?
