GitHub Copilot’s Billing Shift: Why AI Coding Costs Now Need Engineering Discipline
GitHub has announced an important change: GitHub Copilot is moving to usage-based billing starting June 1, 2026.
Instead of “premium request units,” Copilot plans will include a monthly allotment of GitHub AI Credits. Usage will be charged based on token consumption, including input tokens, output tokens, and cached tokens, using model-specific API rates.
The base subscription prices are not changing Copilot Pro remains $10/month, Business remains $19/user/month, and Enterprise remains $39/user/month. Code completions and Next Edit suggestions will continue to be included and will not consume AI Credits.
The reason behind this shift is clear: Copilot is no longer just an in-editor autocomplete tool. It now supports more compute-heavy workflows such as chat, code review, and agentic coding sessions that can run across repositories and consume far more model capacity. GitHub says the previous premium-request model no longer aligned well with actual compute usage.
For organizations, this means Copilot cost management will become more important. GitHub introduces pooled usage across organizations, budget controls, and a billing preview experience to help admins understand projected costs before the transition.
Under the new model, continued usage will depend on available credits and admin budget settings. Copilot code review will also consume GitHub Actions minutes in addition to AI Credits.
Bottom line: Copilot’s list price may stay the same, but the effective cost will increasingly depend on how teams use advanced models, agentic workflows, and automated reviews.
This is a good time for engineering teams to start treating AI usage the same way they treat cloud usage: with visibility, governance, budgets, and clear usage patterns.
The future of AI-assisted development is not just about adoption; it is about responsible and cost-aware adoption.
