Future Holidays

I had two holidays planned for this year. I had to cancel it because of the Corana virus pandemic. It made me think how we will go on holidays if travel is banned in future? Is holiday essential or the experience of having a holiday important? What remains with us after we come back from holiday?

Science fiction movies like Matrix, Inception (many others like these) make you wonder the imagination of the writer and makes us wonder if can it be achieved in future. Will we have the technology to deliver what we see in these movies?

But let us first take a holistic view of 'Experience'. Experiences are nothing but memories stored in our brain once the event has happened.

MEMORY is the only thing that can remind us of our past experiences, whether it is the sight of Eiffel Tower or the taste of freshly made pancake with banana and cream. Holidays are nothing but the experiences that are stored in our MEMORY.

We perceive our physical world through our five senses. These senses are nothing but electrical signals and chemical changes. When we recall something from our MEMORY, the brain is directing electrical signals and chemical changes to recreate the specific condition of our past. It can do so because these experiences are somewhere stored in our MEMORY.

The question is, will the technology of the future helps us to create experiences without leaving the comfort of our chair. I think, yes it can.

We have a much better understanding of how memories are stored and how we recall something from our consciousness. We have made tremendous advancement in medical science with Nanobots and personalised medicines.

I am hopeful that advancement in these fields can lead to a technology that can induce memory. Not only a holiday but we can create any experience we want with the help of technology. Want to go on Mars, explore the depth of the ocean, etc. Imagination will be the only limiting factor.

 What do you think?

Thanks Vivek. Very thought provoking. The concept of a holiday is different for different people. For me its more about leaving the house, taking the flight/train etc..and experiencing the time away from home. Recreating the place / scenery at home may not be the substitute in my opinion :-) Piyush
