The Future of Easy 3D modelling - Structure Sensor.
I was very lucky to see a demo of The Structure Sensor.
Matt Ramirez a pioneering Augmented Reality developer at Mimas,Jisc quickly attached the device to his ipad - walked around me (1 minute) and produced this fantastically detailed 3D model https://skfb.ly/DxtT
Structure Sensor didn't just capture one dimension; it captured everything in view, all at once. I was amazed !
It captured dense geometry in real-time and enables you to simulate real world physics and create high-fidelity 3D models in seconds.
The potential for educational uses is huge. 3D modelling is fantastically engaging for our 21st Century learners, but a bit of a luxury in a time when educational budgets are being reduced.
Structure Sensor could allow us to flip the costing model of 3D artifacts, develop cross institute collaborations and the sharing of best practice across the whole of the educational sector.
If 3D modelling is something your considering it is fantastically priced and would easily be able to recoup its costs in no time at all.
If anyone is interested in getting a project set up to investigate this further let me know.

P.S. I'm not a sales guy for the company just very excited about the concept.
Have a look at their website.
The first promo material is spot on and was really that quick.
P.P.S If you do buy / request more information about the Sensor after this article let them know how you heard about it - you never know they might ask me to demo a couple for educational purposes ? (subtle hint !)
As per Judy Bloxhill's comment download Zappar app and hover over image below off back of my business card - 3d Steve and other contact information
This is a great innovation that would suit a range of subject areas and uses! Looking forward to investigating this further. Possible collaboration Steve?
Good thinking BatGirl !! I've uploaded the zap code at the bottom of the original article. Download Zappar app and point at the Zap code - a great way to provide more information off the back of your business card - credit to Judy for coming up with idea.
The sensor is a couple of hundred dollars, but weigh that up against 3d catalogues it's not a lot at all. Yes tried the app you mentioned, but nowhere near as easy as the sensor. I tried the app to render a crispy creme donut, but believe me even I wouldn't have been tempted to nibble on the 3d object it generated.LOL
Sounds great! How much does a kit cost? Also, have you seen Autodesk 123D catch? They're trying to do something similar with any old smartphone and a free app. It could allow students to take 3d snapshots for assessment and sharing.
realy nice work
