The future of "the book"
I've been involved in the printing industry in various roles, including the ones where you got ink on your fingers, on and off for over 40 years. Since moving in to information systems I have been fascinated with the way in which our increasingly networked society has been affecting areas such as the printing and publishing area. This area has been devastated by electronic publication and distribution. Don't even try for a printing apprenticeship -- you will be hard pressed to find one.
This paper looks at the history of the book, the effects of past disruptive technological changes, and it attempts to make some prediction of the direction of the future of the book as a result of these changes. Library Review has been generous enough to make this the lead article in their latest issue.
