Focused Techniques for Reducing Keystroke Errors - MonkeyType

Mastering any skill requires a keen eye for detail, particularly when it comes to identifying and improving minor mistakes. Whether you’re coding, drafting technical documents, or learning skills that bridge both, like touch typing. The path to mastery involves constant refinement.

Touch typing offers a powerful advantage: it boosts typing speed and reduces mental fatigue, making it easier to keep pace with your thoughts. However, despite its efficiency, writing remains an intellectually demanding task.

At its core, learning touch typing is about training your fingers to instinctively know where to land on the keyboard. Dedicate just 15 minutes a day (or more, if you're serious about improving), and soon, the magic happens. Words will appear on the screen almost effortlessly, keeping up with your thoughts in real-time.

While there are various methods to master touch typing, one widely practiced technique involves focusing on a QWERTY keyboard with home row positioning. This approach divides the keyboard into three sections: the home row, the upper row, and the bottom row.

For those new to touch typing, a fantastic, free resource exists to help you get started: EdClub, which offers engaging courses to guide you on your typing journey.

If you’ve already developed some touch typing skills, as I did before dedicating time to formal practice, you might find that you’ve unconsciously picked up certain bad habits (or maybe good). To refine your skills, focused practice on each row and each hand is essential. Remember, typing efficiently requires all ten fingers, and engaging them all will greatly enhance your speed and accuracy.

In fact, touch typing becomes even more rewarding when paired with grammar practice and vocabulary building. In future articles, I’ll explore how combining English grammar exercises and tools like ChatGPT can complement your touch typing practice, offering dual benefits for language learners. This is particularly crucial for software engineers working with international teams in hackathons, collaborative projects, or conferences.

Now, let’s delve into some custom settings on Monkeytype that can enhance your practice. Specifically, this article will guide you in mastering the alternating shifts and hand placement techniques.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to optimizing your practice:

  1. Access Custom Test Settings: Start by navigating to the custom test settings. Click on custom and then click on change on the left side then click on "words filter" when the new window opens and select either the "right hand" or "left hand" option, depending on your preference

The window that you will use to generate custom settings.

  1. Choose Your Dictionary: Select the dictionary from which the words will be drawn.
  2. Generate New Words: Click on “Generate,” followed by “Set.” The “Set” option generates fresh combinations of words, displaying them for you each time and adding them to your word bank. I mostly use this feature.
  3. Start Typing: Begin practicing touch typing, keeping in mind that you should avoid looking at the keyboard. At first, typing with only one hand may feel awkward, but ensure that when practicing with your left hand, your right-hand stays in the home row position, and vice versa. This technique helps you avoid developing poor habits.
  4. Practice with Capitalized Words: To further enhance your skills, you can import words with the first letter capitalized, allowing you to practice alternating shifts.

Voilà! With dedicated practice, you’ll improve your typing accuracy and speed.

A final note: This entire article was written without glancing at the keyboard. While creative writing and touch typing are distinct disciplines, mastering the latter is the first step to eliminating the stress of constantly looking down at your keys.

Fun Fact: In programming competitions, the top coders are often touch typists. Speed matters when it comes to securing the top spot, and touch typing plays a crucial role in helping them achieve that speed.
