Finding the "meaning' in all that we do....
Doing something meaningful…what does this actually mean? Something beneficial for the society? Or some people? Or just for yourself? When do you say that your life is ‘meaningful’ or who is to say that what you are doing is ‘meaningful’?
Guess there is no standard scale to measure this - to different people it can mean different things – depending also on the stage of life and mindset at that particular time. At one point in time, learning to paint was the most meaningful thing to me while when I first became a mom, the feed-times of my baby were the most meaningful. Now, with the kids grown and with more time to look around, being socially useful has become ‘meaningful’.
My work, which had not been a priority for years has gained more meaning, defining ‘myself’ and my strengths has become more meaningful than ever before. Instilling self-worth and compassion in my children has gained importance. Appearance of doing the ’right’ thing is no longer the focus while ‘feeling’ that I’m making a contribution has become significant.
If you really think about it, its as our vedas said – there are stages in life for everything – one goes from external to internal. One has to ‘live’ through the stages to find the ‘meaning’ of each stage. Sure enough, each step of the journey is ‘meaningful’, we just have to be aware of the meaning we attach to it
What needs congruence is our values and the beliefs we hold. As meanings change, we cannot have immovable beliefs. We need to explore and change beliefs if they are not in tune with who we think we are or who we need to be.
True ‘meaning’ of life is finding out what you want to define yourself as, at that stage of life and be willing to accept a new meaning once your purpose changes. Change, after all, is the only constant
