Exciting World of Data Science

As I enter the second semester of my Masters program in Data Science, I am beginning to realize the power, need and importance of this field. The fact that Prof. Jiawei Han (Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) is going to teach Data mining this semester, is an icing on the cake.

As Prof. Han rightfully states in his book - The world is data rich but information poor. The power of data analysis has already opened tremendous opportunities to improve the lives of people around us and the trend will continue.

The course will cover the topics of Pattern Discovery and Cluster Analysis. The first assignment in the course is to implement the Apriori algorithm. By applying the algorithm, I found frequent patterns in the 80K line dataset that otherwise would take hours and hours of manual analysis.

I am looking forward to exploring the wonderful world of Data mining in this class.
