Evolving from a software developer to an IT Architect -What it takes

IT career path for a typical software professional starts of as a software developer and usually takes several turns while some roles add value and align with your expertise to challenge your intellectual abilities most other roles are limited to performing some routine tasks which add least value to your skills in terms of using your current abilities and in fact they push you into a comfort zone where you do not want to stretch your limits to face new challenges and hone your abilities. Hard fact is that the designations change in most cases as years of experience increase but internally you still remain a Jr. Developer who needs guidance to face any not so obvious situations at your work. Reality is that majority of IT developer careers are struck in this zone leading the professionals to face an uncertain and bleak future for their professional career path.

The demanding Industry driven by business needs rather than employee emotional quotient is not the only one to be blamed. As a matter of fact with the availability of quality workforce at cheaper rates it is too costly for anybody to stay in a comfort zone without striving for excellence. It is at the cost of our family and loved one's happiness. Now let us look at what it takes to evolve from where we are and the ways to turn our limitations into our opportunities

  • Being vigilant and alert to the current affairs in your field of work.
  • Not  to yourself to a specific technology or platform and to be ready to learn new technologies if situation demands.
  • Not to condition yourself to specific restrictions which makes least sense when you say it aloud. In other words acknowledging your unknown and undefined fears.
  • Not to hesitate to learn fundamentals even if it is too late now.
  • Being proactive to understand why do things the way they are done and to focus on bigger picture to understand the impact and significance of your work.
  • Ask right questions to right people.
  • Take ownership of every minute task you are handling and prove to your leadership team that you are accountable.
  • Invest your time in yourself to see what your true strengths and weaknesses are and what it takes to progress from where you are to where you really want to be.
  • "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas".. :-)... so relax do not take it too seriously life means much more than working in a  IT job. Don't carry your work stress too personally and let it affect your professional and personal relationships.
