Escaping the AI Coding Trap
We are living in a strange moment. Tools can generate a feature in the time it takes to refill a mug. Demos impress. Roadmaps feel lighter. Then the bill arrives: a tangle of fixes, fuzzy ownership, brittle integrations, and code nobody fully understands. The code is not necessarily bad. The problem is that we asked AI to sprint on the cheapest part of the job and treated the sprint like the race.
This is the AI coding trap: confusing fast typing with fast delivery.
The Tech-Lead Dilemma in New Clothes
Every experienced lead knows the tradeoff. If the most senior person carries the hard parts, the team ships faster today and becomes more fragile tomorrow. LLM agents create the same short-term high. They blaze through implementation while the expensive work lags behind: clarifying intent, shaping interfaces, handling edge cases, and making the system observable and safe.
The strategic question is not how much AI to use. The strategic question is where AI belongs in the way you build, and when you switch modes.
Two Honest Modes for 2025
1) Vibe coding When complexity is low and reversibility is high, speed wins. Spikes, proofs of concept, internal tools, disposable migrations. In these cases an agent’s velocity is a feature, not a risk. You are exploring, not enshrining.
2) AI-driven engineering Once work touches coupled systems, user trust, security boundaries, or scale, you have crossed a threshold. The job becomes less about producing code and more about protecting understanding. Clear behavior, stable contracts, traceable side effects, and changes you can reason about later. In this mode AI is still your ally, but inside constraints that preserve comprehension.

Incident drag drops. Promises to customers and the board become more credible. Most importantly, capability grows in the team rather than consolidating in a handful of heroes.
AI is not a shortcut past engineering. It is a stress test of it. Used well, it exposes where your organization confuses motion with progress and invites you to fix that. Set the threshold where vibe coding ends. Invest in constraints that compound. Keep understanding at the center of the work. That is how you turn speed into an advantage rather than a liability.
