Engineering Education?

Engineering Education?

In Tamilnadu Engineering college counseling is over still 1.1 Lakh engineering seats are vacant.Totally 34 Govt colleges and 552 private engineering colleges are there in Tamilnadu alone. So approximately 187 seats per college is vacant. This kind of under utilization of capacity will definitely damage our engineering education.

On one side we are talking about Make in India but the market is not congruent with the system. This mismatch is due to uneconomical and diluted engineering education. For completing an engineering degree, a student have to shell out at least INR 8 Lakh (the student would heave already spent INR 8 lakh for his schooling). Even if a student complete his engineering degree and get a job, his salary is not enough to repay his educational loan. some where the equation is wrong. So It is right time to rethink about the cost structure of our engineering education.

Any professional education is taught by practicing professionals except this Engineering Education. Practicing doctor is teaching medical course, practicing Chartered accountant teach CA courses..etc..Now it is the time to wake up and make India employable with the inborn Mathematical skilled Indians. Employable engineers may be sent abroad for employment instead of our products ( we can save our country from pollution). We need to move out from manufacturing economy to knowledge economy. China has already taken enough steps and initiated knowledge economy transformation some 40 years ago. Many of the Chinese universities has world level ranking.

For to have a lean cost structured Engineering college, they should employ part time faculty, who work in a factory. From second year onward engineering college student also should work for a factory on a part time basis. If a student work for a day per week then an engineering college with 4000 students equal to a 100 full time employees factory. [4000 students X8 hrs per student per week /(48 man hours X 7  days)] = 95.58 students. this way college can employ low salaried faculty and students also can earn while they do their courses.

if we do not set this right then the same thing will happen to our school education also. Currently School education is also costing around 1 Lakh per year per student. so in future schools will also find it difficult to fill up their seats.

Educators wake up.. make India a Knowledge economy..

Jai Hind..
