Dreaming of the cloud.

Dreaming of the cloud.

Cloud computing is becoming a hotter topic then ever and organizations that even a year ago were saying "the cloud is not for me" are now looking at what it  means to them and whether the cloud provides economic or other reasons to change their IT landscape.

It is hard to think of an organization that cannot benefit from Cloud and some of the new ways of working. Technologies such as Lambda bring the promise of serverless computing with much reduced administration and TCO. This will power the next growth phase of technology. Imagine a world where we spend less time worrying about maintenance and administration and much more about what the systems can do for us. This is the deep promise of the Cloud. It is analogous to the early days of the car where I can stop worrying about whether I will actually get somewhere without breaking down and start dreaming about what I will do when I get there. The next stage  is the production line, where I can plug pieces of technology together to much more rapidly create something new.

In many other areas such as security, flexibility and scaleability the cloud already leads many on premises systems. This means that everyone has to look at it as a way to reduce capital expenditures and in these days of constant security breaches, realize that the collective wisdom of the Cloud might be better than going it alone.

Cloud is made for sharing with external actors. Twenty years ago the sharing of and collaboration on content was handled exclusively within an organization. This has now changed completely and most organizations are sharing  content with external suppliers, employees and contractors. Doing this fast, securely and without extra burden to IT is critical.

Clouds are not just for dreaming it seems.
