Don’t follow the tech, follow the users.

Don’t follow the tech, follow the users.

Consumer Inspired.

As a consumer it seems apparent that technology is quickly advancing and that we’re often trying to keep up.

The truth is, we’re the ones demanding change and tech is trying to keep up with us. Whether it’s conscious or not, our ever changing habits of what we want, what we need and essentially what we adopt is driving technological change.

It doesn’t matter how quick tech changes and new things appear; the second we see something new we’re already thinking of uses and improvements. We will always think faster than tech can keep up. It takes very little to inspire the human mind (some more than others, it has to be said), it’s just a small case of planting the seed or unlocking the thought you never knew you had. It happens fast and it evolves even quicker. By the time that new tech arrives and you get a glimpse it’s already, very nearly outdated because consumers are instantaneously thinking about the next set of possibilities, which in most cases is, how do I get more lazy? (Or put more self justifiably, how do I make this easier?)

In our industry we have to bear this in mind. It’s common to get wrapped up in the latest devices, platforms or digital experiences and take inspiration from them, even copy them.

If we do that, we risk losing sight of the mark. We should be watching the consumers. They’re already 10 steps ahead, they just don’t know it and it’s up to us as producers of new digital services, products and experience based design, to work that out.

If we study our audience and our prospective target customers we’ll not only know what they like now, we’ll be able to better understand what they’ll like next. Because that’s the thing, develop for what’s coming, what they’ll love. If we create what they want now, by the time it’s complete, it’s already too late.
