Does your Title value you?

Does your Title value you?

Happy Monday. Over the weekend I was thinking on the subjects of Values and Titles - My first reflection was laying in bed hungover on Saturday Morning, slowly convincing myself to not get out of bed and do some marketing for the week ahead. The main questions striking me were: How much do you really value your title? Have you over-valued your title? Does your Title reflect your Values?

I remember back to times in my career, where good people had told me "Titles mean nothing" - I always thought its a great way to be humble, but at the same time - I've got the title why not show it off?

For me, I have to look at it with youth as my management roles start at the age of 18 and I don't disagree with the fact that maturity is a decision, however the kid in everyone can do some good! At 19, I was a Sales Director on a small floor in London and my main goal each and everyday was to put a smile on peoples faces. Positive mood settings, vibes, energy - being my main goal, why was it also my main fear? Why did I feel the pressure to re-instate my position every day to those I was leading from the front?

A good friend of mine once told me: "That the best way to sell is to under-promise and over-achieve". I believe hands-down that if you are looking to gain a referral-network in your portfolio, its best to surprise people with great results. Think about it, people generally talk with more excitement about the surprises they've had than the promises that someone once made them. There is a fine balance you need to find between Over Selling & Under Telling - we have to think about the age we are all in - People DO NOT want to be sold.

The moral of all this is don't walk before you can run. After every position I've worked, earned or been promoted too - I've always rushed in excitement to order new business cards, change my email signature, LinkedIn... to essentially show off & enjoy the short-term buzz of achieving the next level.

The only position where all this didn't apply was my current one. I could show the world and live the buzz of being a young owner, but I've been humbled by my experiences and successes, and for once - My title now under-values who I am. I go into my sales as a Senior Consultant at the business and It's great to be honest, all I need to do now is: over-achieve.

Wishing you all a prosperous day.

Your title gives value in the eyes of people who might not know you. Great piece.

Great article. I sometimes think if people strived for the title "good co-worker", we would all be in a better place.
