DOES “CORNER OF THE DESK” HUMAN RESOURCES WORK?

Clearing that corner of your desk will improve efficiency and save everyone’s sanity.

Sparked by my blog of a few weeks ago, a friend asked me about overtime rules. Her workplace was a little loose on the calculations required, but they did have inhouse HR. As she said: “one of the owners looks after it.”

This sounds like a serious case of “corner of the desk” HR stealing time and energy from people with other important responsibilities.  You would never hire a human resources expert to design a new app or install your solar panels, so why let a non-expert handle your human resources?   Human Resources are time consuming and mistakes can be devastating and expensive.

Here are 4 good reasons to either hire an inhouse expert or outsource your human resources either fulltime or parttime.

·       Risk Mitigation: HR experts avert potential risks by ensuring compliance with employment legislation, advising on termination requirements, and resolving tricky employee situations.

·       Cost Savings: Engagement programs elevate employee contributions. Engaged employees are 22% more productive, absent less often, and more dedicated to your business; therefore, less likely to leave. Replacing an employee costs about half their annual salary and can cost up to twice their salary. HR implements programs to keep your employees happily yours.

·       Time Savings: Time is money. Small business owners spend up to 20% of their time – that’s one day a week - on people related issues: hiring, documentation, onboarding, conflict resolution, vacation and scheduling requests…. What could you do with an extra 52 days this year?

·       Sanity: Let the owners concentrate on the business they love.  Let everyone focus on the job they were hired to do. That’s a win for everyone in the sanity department.

HR is rarely a billable position, but when you tally up the reasons for hiring an expert, the return on investment is obvious. It might not be time to move HR to the corner office, but definitely time to move it off the corner of the desk.

HR Continuum can provide fulltime or parttime inhouse or outsourced solutions for your unique human resources requirements… and you can clear off that corner of your desk.
