Do. Or Do Not

Do. Or Do Not

Do or Do not. There is no Try.” ~Yoda

I have always loved this quote. And, really, how can you NOT heed the advice of a 900-year-old Jedi master muppet? Other than the fact that he's cute in an odd sort of way and he is extremely powerful, this little guy laid down major knowledge on the regular. He had a way of saying things in such a way that resonated. This particular quote is one of his most popular because it's a reminder to commit yourself to something completely, win or lose.

Try Implies Lack of Commitment

Words matter. The dialogue we have with ourselves is very telling. The use of the word try is usually a strong indicator that the action or behavior will never happen because it is signaling half measures. There is a lack of commitment. By its very definition, it means to make an attempt or effort. Making an attempt is a much different mindset than I'm doing. When you have committed to do something, you say you are going to do it and then, you do it.

Stop with the lip service

This same thought process and conversation occurs within ourselves when we are contemplating changing a behavior. When we tell ourselves we are going to “try” to quit smoking, lose weight, save money, etc., failure inherently becomes an option. The word “try” provides lip service by expressing in words but not backed by deeds. Maybe the sentiment is even there, but it still lacks commitment. At least we tried, right?

In the realm of behavior change, it's Ok to not be committed. There should be no judgment about whether it's right or wrong, it's just an assessment and one you need to be honest about. The key is to not lie to yourself or soften the reality. Commitment comes with sacrifices and trade-offs and it may not be the right time for you.

Commitment is the glue that matches our words with our deeds and is the stuff of which success is made. If you really want success or real change, you'll have to commit at some point and accept the sacrifices.

Conclusion

The words we say to ourselves have power, so we must be honest about our intentions. It's the only way to get unstuck in order to move forward in reaching our goals. When you commit, there is no wiggle room. You make yourself accountable.  You will do your best and move forward towards your goal regardless of setbacks. Success then becomes the only option.

Changing behaviors is no easy task and takes a full commitment of mental energy. Usually, it requires preparation and training, much like a Jedi. Ok, maybe not quite as intense. But developing a similar mindset of patience, discipline, courage, acceptance of setbacks, and aiming for success of the mission will help guide you and ensure success on your journey.
