USING TEMPLATES

Using a template or theme to start a website would be to set up a WordPress site and apply a template bought from today's available template websites such as templatemonster.com or themeforest.com. These websites provide different types of website templates available for purchase. Not all the themes/templates are 100% responsive (such as phones, tablets, laptops, etc.).

Secondly, there are services like Wix or Squarespace that also provide a theme and allow you to edit within their platforms. These can get a website up fast and easily. However, there are limitations on the options that are available for more complex features such as forms or e-commerce functions.

Lastly, one thing to keep in mind is speed and load times. These canned templates and themes normally come with pre-existing features for more customizability but, this ultimately effects load speed and SEO performance. It’s very likely that you’ll have to put up with the features, designs, and functions that won’t necessarily fit your brand or business. You could pay a web development company to fix the issues, but that could be costly and could cause future problems with display and updates.

PROS/CONS OF USING TEMPLATES

1) Other businesses could be using the same template which means your website won’t be unique and stand out.

2) Huge learning curve on the template platforms.

3) You are limited on customization.

4) May not 100% work on all devices (such as phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) & browsers.

5) Many "Do it yourself" (DIY) platforms are not user friendly, causing you stress and wasted time.

6) Many templates are not search engine friendly. So,

Google and other search engines will not be your friend.

7) Any custom design or added technologies are limited and in some cases, not possible as templates run on a proprietary, structured platform.

8) Templates are great for low budgets.

9) Templates decrease development time.

10) Template sites don't have the support system as a custom-built site.

CUSTOM-BUILT WEBSITES

Custom designed websites involve a creative process that understands branding and defining your target audience... how you want the website to function and how to look to attract prospective customers.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) also plays a big role in the success of any website. There are strict rules to follow when building a new website and not all templates and themes are capable of these rules and requirements. Therefore, custom-built websites are more superior, the web developer is able to optimize the site during the creation to allow for google and other search engines to read each page to give the end user a more relevant search result thus, giving custom built sites a better ranking on the search engines.

Custom built websites take longer to design and build versus a template, this is due to everything being built and customized to a particular company from the ground up. In the long run it will save you time, because when its built from scratch, it’s a lot easier to customize and maintain because its custom built for your business. Custom designs are 100% responsive across all devices (such as phones, tablets, laptops, etc.) & browsers.

PROS/CONS OF CUSTOM-BUILT WEBSITES

1) The website design will be 100% unique and have no limitations and incorporate a company’s brand based around the needs of the business.

2) The website will attract prospective customers.

3) A customized website is adaptable to your company’s needs

4) The site is tested to work across all web browsers.

5) Custom websites are necessary for e-commerce

6) The site will be 100% responsive across all devices (such as phones, tablets, laptops, etc)

7) The site will be search engine friendly.

8) A customized website is more expensive than a template.

9) The process to create a custom site takes longer than a template site.

10) The site will grow with your business.

11) The company that built your site is there to support it, if needed.

12) With a custom-built website, your full attention can be on running your business and not wasting time on confusing template/theme platforms.

A website can be a very powerful tool when done correctly, but a poorly-executed one will work against you. The bottom line is that you should choose your path carefully, no matter what type of site you get — and for many businesses, custom-built sites are better investments in the long run, because they can grow with you!
